The
Russell Memorial Weekend 2007 |
The 13th festival commemorating
the Russells is taking place in Doolin on Friday 23rd to Sunday
25th of February next. It opens on Friday 23rd at 8-30pm with a
concert by Mártín O'Connor and friends.
Button accordion player Máirtín O'Connor
has been a member of the group De Danann and has also toured
with Riverdance. He has had an influential career as a solo
artist since the 1980s and includes amongst his solo albums,
Connachtman's Rambles, Perpetual Motion, Rain of Light, Road
West, and Chatterbox where he gives expression to his fluid
style, and wide musical influences.
On Friday night
February 23rd 2007 in the
Russell Cultural Centre in Doolin, Co. Clare Mártín will be
performing with Sligo-born Séamie O'Dowd and the Co Tyrone
fiddler Cathal Hayden.
Cathal Hayden has been a member of
Arcady and has been the
driving force in Four Men and a Dog since its foundation in
1993. In his formative years as a musician he won the
All-Ireland Fleadh in both banjo and fiddle. His solo albums
Handed Down (1980) and Cathal Hayden (1999) are
considered amongst the finest recorded.
Séamie O’Dowd comes from
County Sligo. He has been
a member of the group Dervish for many years. His first solo
album, Headful of Echoes, features him playing fiddle, guitar,
and harmonica. Séamie who is highly regarded by his peers
features on albums by Máirtín O’Connor, Liam O’Flynn, Matt
Molloy, Mary Mc Partlan, and Steve Wickham.
The Russell concert on Saturday Feb 24th
at 2pm will feature performances from Tommy Peoples, Sean
Garvey, Mickey Dunne, Gavin Whelan & Liam Meehan, Chris Droney,
Paddy Hynes, Paddy Neylon, and Frank Custy's Group, and many
more. The concert will be followed by a wine and food reception
for all attending. Tickets €20 at the door.
On Sunday the 25th Feb at 1 pm the
Anniversary Remembrance Mass for the Russells will take place at
Doolin Church to the accompaniment of hymns and songs from the
Doolin church choir. It will be followed by a wreath-laying
ceremony at the Russell grave, songs of farewell, and tunes to
raise the dead.
Set dancing will be help at 3pm at the
Russell Cultural Centre, music by Four Courts Céilí Band.
Tickets at the door.
Events for the weekend are rounded off at
the sessions in O’Connors’, McGann’s, and McDermott’s.
